Lot Details

a squat cylindrical stoneware food storage jar of buff coloured clay. Concave base, with a circular spur mark, everted basal ring; slightly swollen and flared wall with a high shoulder, short neck, everted rim and wide mouth. The interior and exterior excluding the base and resting surface dipped in a dark brown glaze. Material: Stoneware Origin/Date: China Guangdong, late 19thC Cat. Note/Condition/Ref.: Elongated ovoid break (0.8 x 3.5cm HW) on upper wall. Fair. For a discussion of the body type see: Neville A Ritchie, Archaeology and history of the Chinese in southern New Zealand during the nineteenth century : a study of acculturation, adaptation, and change (Unpublished PhD thesis, University of Otago, 1986), pp. 238-242. The jar falls within the dimensions of Ritchie's classification of the small type of squat food storage jars found on local archaeological sites, i.e. 9.7 to 10.3cm H. Dimensions: H.10.6cm.
